Crop diversification effects on soil organic carbon and nitrogen storage and stabilization is mediated by soil management practices in semiarid woody crops

چکیده

Crop diversification is a promising strategy to mitigate climate change through soil carbon sequestration while ensuring fertility maintenance and food security. Here, we assess the impact of different inter-cropping practices on organic (SOC) nitrogen (N) storage stabilization under rainfed irrigated semiarid conditions. Under conditions, an almond (Prunus dulcis Mill.) monocrop was compared with inter-cropped caper (Capparis spinosa) or winter thyme (Thymus hyemalis). mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) annual crop rotation (including Hordeum vulgare, Vicia sativa faba) triennial faba, Portulaca oleracea Vigna unguiculata L.). The SOC N stocks, mineralization rates, water-stable aggregates associated OC contents were estimated at 0–10 10–30 cm depth in each system after three years. Contrasting effects found systems. combination no tillage did not affect stocks rates any system, it significantly increased within large macro-aggregates subsoil. Compared monocrop, mandarins showed significant increase 10% 18% topsoil subsoil respectively, reduced by 30% both depths. On contrary, stock 38% monocrop. Significant reductions ranging between 24% 66% also observed macro- micro-aggregates diversifications system. Our results highlight potential woody crops perennials for boosting stabilization. In monocrops, schemes that include two more leguminous reducing frequency operations seems be appropriate terms

Effects of Soil and Crop Management Practices on Soil Quality

Developing the concept of soil quality may help identify the soil and crop management practices required for environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable agriculture. Objectives of this paper are (1) to review current efforts to define soil quality, (2) to discuss factors and processes which influence soil quality, (3) to identify, soil and crop management practices that affect proce...

The Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...

Modelling tillage and nitrogen fertilization effects on soil organic carbon

1 Agricultural management plays an important role in global warming mitigation due to 2 its effects on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics. In Mediterranean agroecosystems, 3 the interactive effects of tillage and N fertilization on SOC storage have scarcely been 4 studied. Hence, we here present a modelling study in which the effects of both tillage 5 and N fertilization on SOC dynamics are inv...

Maximum soil organic carbon storage in Midwest U.S. cropping systems when crops are optimally nitrogen-fertilized

Nitrogen fertilization is critical to optimize short-term crop yield, but its long-term effect on soil organic C (SOC) is uncertain. Here, we clarify the impact of N fertilization on SOC in typical maize-based (Zea mays L.) Midwest U.S. cropping systems by accounting for site-to-site variability in maize yield response to N fertilization. Within continuous maize and maize-soybean [Glycine max (...

Geological controlling soil organic carbon and nitrogen density in a hillslope landscape, semiarid area of Golestan province, Iran

The effects of geological conditionwere assessed on density of Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) and Nitrogen (N)in a sequence of hillslope landscape, derived from different lithology i.e. loess deposit, reworked loess, marl with mixed siltstone and shale, reddish brown clay deposits and older loess in the semiarid area of northern Iran. However, other factors can influence SOC and N density such as la...
